It’s a Nebbiolo that tells our story and that of a sort of viticulture that some people have called “extreme”, but which for us is simply the way we make wine. It’s a Nebbiolo that has ingrained in it the truest representation of the land where we put down our roots many years ago.Every wine we produce contains the history of so many people within it and, above all, of the person who wanted and created this winery in the first place: his name was Nino Negri.
Our winery has been in Chiuro, in the heart of the Valtellina, for over a century. Since 1897 entire generations have shouldered the experience and time-honoured knowledge of mountain winemaking. And yet, during these 100 years we’ve also changed, looking for innovation in our heritage. We have always tried to reinvent ourselves with one aim in mind: to take our wines as far as possible into the future.
Imagine a terraced amphitheatre made up of roots, rocks and vineyards, the most imposing in Italy, surrounded by the high slopes of the Lombardy Alps and by two thousand five hundred kilometres of centuries-old drystone walls. A place permeated with the sun’s rays and dramatic temperature swings, protected by high mountain chains from the freezing northern winds and the humid scirocco from the south. If you can indeed imagine all of this, it could well be because you’ve already been in the Valtellina.
Our vines, called Chiavennasca, found their place here many years ago. From their favoured position the Nebbiolo grapes have the time and the opportunity to soak up all the subtle differences and peculiarities of the territory and pass them on to the wine which will thus be nothing less than unique.
Within the space of a few kilometres, the territory of the Valtellina changes infinite times, experiences diverse seasons and contrasting climatic conditions. The Nebbiolo produced in our winery is nothing but the truthful and honest story of all this. You will find in our lines the clear mark of mountain winemaking and the typical characteristics of the Valtellina.
